Implicit biases, the unconscious thoughts that influence us

Implicit biases are unconscious associations that influence how we perceive other people.
Explicit biases are, on the other hand, beliefs that we consciously hold.
Implicit biases operate below the level of conscious awareness. They are the result of personal experiences, culture, and exposure to different situations and environments.
We, as a result, may unconsciously pass judgments or make decisions based on assumptions rather than real information.
A teacher may unconsciously expect different grades from different students based on their race.
An employer may unconsciously pick an applicant due to unconscious associations that attribute industriousness and reliability to that individual, even without real evidence.
Implicit biases are not permanent, their effects can be mitigated. Paying attention, considering different perspectives, and making efforts to base our decisions on evidence rather than assumptions are some of the ways that help us avoid that trap.
Being aware of these unconscious perceptions forces people to question their first impressions, and evaluate situations more objectively.
It is difficult to eliminate all our unconscious biases, but recognizing their existence is an important factor that will help us make more thoughtful and equitable decisions.
